Remember that summer, that this band was singing about T Shirt Weather, reminding you instantly of days that you can just go out in your T shirt, the sun blazing hot outside and you can just enjoy the day in the song. I am kind of long for those sunny days again I am done with the rain and the fall weather rather than winter weather T-Shirt Weather was of course the most famous song by the band Circa Waves.
Yesterday Circa Waves released their new album "Never Going Under". "T-Shirt Weather" was the song that stuck to me like glue, like Noive from the Kooks, which was similarly sunny. This album bring a ray of sun in the everlasting rainy days, in the form of "Hell On Earth" A summer gitarriff, with a flavour of high and catchy backing vocals, brings it all together in a hell of a rock song.
"Never Going Under" is exactly what always draws me into this genre, to these kind of bands, the perfect indie rock sound, a perfect song to start the album with an to get you in the mood. It has enough rocking drums to catch my attention and a delicious guitar solo to tie it all down. Just perfection.
Do You Want To Talk reminded me of Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know. It is a straight forward indie rock song. I like were this album is goitng so far. The first 3 songs are as I said indie rock perfection, "Your Ghost" and "Carry You Home" bring with it a more electronical sound, think of The Temper Trap in this regard. Only less floating away on a cloud, a little bit more like a balloon on a string.
"Northern Town" seems to be an ode to growing up in a small town, the reckless, everything is possible mentality of growning up. The endless possibilities. The next song can be seen as the polar opposite of "Northern Town". "Electric City would have been the perfect soundtrack for the movie Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Unfortunately the movie came first.
"Want It All Today" is my least favorite of the album, it just does not feel right to me, something in it make the hairs on the back of my neck stand off. It might be the piano that doesn't work for me.
All in all Never Going Under is a solid indie rock album, want to put on your list with The Killers, Twho Door Cinema Club or the Kooks. I am going to add this to my playlist, I need all te sunshine I can get these days.
Have you been as impressed by this album as me, they are currently on tour and will be playing at the Tolhuistuin of Paradiso the 23rd of February.
