Sometimes the Youtube algorithm gets it right, and does not bring me Billie Eilish for the hunderd time, but actually brings me something I really like. This time YouTube you have done it right, and you brought me this beautiful indie rockers to digest. This album is one of those rare pearls that show up on my radar on occasion. This album is damn good, I want this all of it, and so much more. And most of all I want to see this live.
Well then, if you haven't guessed by the album cover, this review will be on Kid Kapichi's second album "Here's What You have Won. I have never heard of this band before YouTube threw it at me, and a good thing too because this is right up my alley. At first glance it kind of reminds me of Kasabian, especially in the vocal department, but that might just be the English accent doing its thing. There is no question that these guys are from the UK, you can hear it clearly. These guys have been playing together for a while and produced their debut album themselves. For this second album they have worked together with the producer of Nothing But Thieves, which we all know of course.
That these guys have been playing together for a long time can also be seen in their live performance, I have included one below for you to enjoy.
Back to the album, this was released in September 2022, and the album is a little gloomy, tit is clear that this is about Brexit and the state this left the country in. Maybe they made the wrong choice by leaving the EU? I think this is a feeling shared by many of the English people.
New England, is just that an anti-Brexit song, it so English, and I love it that the singer does not hide his English accent, love it! New England is the perfect starter of the album, also could be a good starter for a concert. They don't define themselves by genre, and the collaboration with Bob Vylan attests to that. Bob Vylan who is more in the field of hiphop, add another dimension to this song. Which is upbeat right to the end, and this trend continues with Rob The Supermarket as well.
This album has a very strong drums vibe/base, which you will find definitely in songs like 5 Days On (2 Days Off), where the cowbell is front and center, and gives a clear rythm to the song. This number is also a clear statement on the poor state the UK is in showing of in the lyrics major problem such as the following: "Well, you can cut out the drugs" "And you can stop the drinking" which of course are will know problems in the UK.
Party at No. 10 is a nice change to the heavy rock vibe this album has, not that there is anything wrong with that, I am totally loving it, but a quiet song is always a nice change. It makes an album more divers, and it shows of the how talented the singer of this band is, because damn this is a beautiful ballad.
Cops & Robbers, is more playful then the rest of the album, it has a more happy and carefree feeling. Like childern playing on a playground. The Nananananana in the chorus emphasizes this.
I already talked about how divers this album is, and Tar Pit brings with it something new lots of layers in this one and it is very different form the other songs on this album. It is interesting, sort of like a space opera on its own.
Smash the Gaff was the first song I have encountered by this band and I really like the video they made for it, it is so recognizable, sometimes the world just keeps throwing lemons at you and you just want to smash something.
I think this will be a new favorite band for me, I would very much like to see them live. This is right up my alley and who know what the festival summer will bring, maybe they will be playing somewhere I am going, who knows?
